How to Determine What Size Tires You Need

posted on

Is it time for new tires? If so, you need to purchase the right tires for your vehicle. Some of the signs that could indicate that it is time for new tires include that your vehicle is unable to come to a complete stop quickly, that your tires have issues handling wet roads, and that you feel like you are skidding when you go around curves. At  Integrity Tires, we are available to help you find the right tires for your vehicle. How can you find tires that are the right size for your wheels? Take a look at a few important points below, and give us a call to schedule an appointment with our service center.

Where To Find Your Tire Size

Of course, different vehicles have different wheel sizes. For example, a motorcycle is probably not going to have the same tire size as a sedan, and a truck is not going to have the same tire size as an RV. If you are looking for the tire size that you need, you should start by taking a look at the inside of your driver's door. There is usually a sticker with all the information you need to figure out your tire size. If you cannot find the information there, you can usually find it in your owner's manual. Make sure you understand exactly what size tires you need before you start the shopping process.

What Do the Tire Measurements Mean?

If you keep reading, you will probably find a variety of values related to your tires. Some of the most important values you will come across include:

  • The Width: The with refers to the width of the tires for your vehicle, usually measured in millimeters. If you read from left to right, it will be the first number that you come across.
  • Aspect Ratio: You will probably see another number after a slash. This is the aspect ratio, and it tells you how tall your tires are.
  • Construction: The letter you see refers to the construction of your tires. R is one of the most common types, and it stands for radial. The others you might see include D for diagonal and B for bias ply.
  • Rim Diameter: You will also see a measurement for your rim diameter. This is the size of the rim onto which the tire can be mounted.
  • Load Index: The next number you see is the load index. It refers to the total weight, in pounds, that the tire can support.
  • Speed Rating: The final letter you will see is the speed rating. If you see an S, it means that the tire can support speeds up to 112 MPH.

These numbers might be different for vehicles and tires sold in metric countries, but this is a basic overview of what the different measurements mean for tires.

What Other Factors Should You Consider When Looking for Tires?

Of course, size is only one of the many factors you should consider when you are looking for tires. Some of the other factors that you need to consider include:

  • The total lifespan of the tires, usually measured in terms of miles
  • The type of driving you do, such as whether you drive in the city or on the highway
  • The weather in the area in which you drive, such as tropical weather, winter weather, or something in between
